2022.01.24 16:16 blocki_super What to do if a current pulls you away after you fall through the ice?
So I recently saw a video of a person jumping in a hole in a frozen river and getting sucked away by the current, and I wondered; What could one do if it happens to them? Is there any chance of survival?
I tried searching on the internet for a good while, but all I found was what to do if you fall through thin ice, and nothing about any water currents pulling.

2022.01.24 16:16 Lqwombat1 Discrepancies between IQ tests
My FSIQ and GAI on the WAIS-IV couldn’t be determined because my verbal score was substantially higher than all my other scores. If I were to to average the scores anyways I would have an FSIQ of 110 and a GAI of 114.
My sub test scores were: Working memory: 111 (95% mathematical, 37% digit span) Perceptual reasoning: 100(16% block design, 85% matrix reasoning) Processing speed: 97(I forget the sub test scores) Verbal reasoning: 125(99.3% vocab, 92% similarities, 75% general knowledge)
I ended up taking the Mensa admission test and passed which implies an IQ score above the 98%. I should also mention they didn’t give me a specific score they simply told me I was invited to join.
If I had to guess I probably scored between 39-41 (~98%~99%)on the Wonderlic test and I have no idea what I might have scored on the RAIT, but as far as I know you only need to get above the 98% mark on one of the two tests to be admitted.
How could there be this large of a discrepancy between my score on the WAIS-IV and the Mensa admissions test?
I should also note that I was dealing with relatively severe anxiety, insomnia, and on a new medication at the time I took the WAIS-IV. I just didn’t think those factors could account for such a large discrepancy between the two tests.
Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

2022.01.24 16:16 Desertedfoxx What do you think about people going to "cool" Universities?
In my home country, not everyone can go to University (and I gather this is true for most countries). Only the "best" of the bunch get the chance and the tests are hard. Basically it's for serious people only. University degrees are usually for those wanting highly specialized degrees, STEM fields, engineers, doctors, etc. Uni is "free" here, yes, but that's because if we're going to invest in free education, we want to make sure there's a return on the investment. Most people go to vocational schools or "colleges" for everything else.
In US everyone can go to Uni, my friend who, excuse my language, is pretty stupid and cheated her way through High School, got admitted to a nice Uni, mind you she didn't stay local (because ew) and headed to UT Austin cuz that's where all her friends and cool kids wanted to be at. Best party/college city too. She got a Theater degree after 5 years, and now works at Home Depot, racked up $67k and says Fuck Biden because he won't cancel them.
Also, in most countries, Universities are a place to LEARN. In US, many if not most Universities are like basically:

2022.01.24 16:16 Mr_Sir_ii How do you perform the raking technique with a pick?
Want to preface this by saying I am absolute shit with the pick. I feel so much more comfortable playing with my fingers but I can't get the same sound and effect with many songs. Especially this raking effect when all the strings are struck but only one rings out. It just changes the feel of the whole note.
I've watched videos on YouTube but I just can't get the hang of it. It feels really uncomfortable and the few times I'm successful with muting all the strings, I'm not able to add vibrato or bends because my other fingers are occupied with trying to mute the other strings.
One video mentioned muting the strings using the back of the palm but as hard as I try, I end up muting the playing string too. Another video showed a combo of muting with palm and with the spare fingers but then if I'm muting with my fingers, I can't seem to add vibrato or bend because my fingers are in a weird position trying to mute. It's so frustrating that I end up just going back to playing without the pick but I want to get better at it.
How do you guys do it? And how long did it take you to get the hang of it?

2022.01.24 16:16 RomperMcJohnson First Carvana Purchase Experience (positive)
Hello everyone! I was using this thread as a research tool before deciding to go through with a vehicle purchase from Carvana. I noticed a lot of people posting about their delays and not-so-positive experiences, so I figured I'd throw my hat in the ring for anyone looking to learn a little more on how everything went for me and give anyone that is considering Carvana hope that everything can be all right.
Just over 2 weeks ago, my 2015 civic began to leak fluid from the CVT transmission, turned out to be an external pressure switch, got it fixed. I never really "loved" my civic, it was just a car to get around, so I decided with the recent mechanical issue it may be time to upgrade, as I really heavily on my vehicle for income (I do Doordash). I knew about Carvana so I decided to check it out after visiting some reddit threads and doing some research online. My car had recently been in an accident (head on collision that caused about $2k of damage), that was definitely on the car report. I put in all my info on the civic and got a quote from Carvana for $11.5k trade-in value.
Wow. The offer was way better than what I was expecting, especially with an accident on record (the car is low miles though, only 56k), so I was immediately surprised (I also purchased the car for $13k 4 years ago, so minimal loss of value).
With the offer "locked-in" I started to look for a new car. I already had an idea of what car I want, as I live in California, and gas prices are nuts, so I was in the market for a hybrid. I looked at prius's and chevy volts, but then remembered seeing a Lexus I really liked the look of, a ct200h, and decided to look up value. For the same price as a prius, I could get a Lexus CT200, and that day I found one with low miles (50k) with one owner and a GREAT track record for service for the life of the vehicle. After talking with my wife, decided to go ahead with the purchase. I did everything through Carvana (financing, extended insurance etc.) to make it go smoothly. The process was extremely easy and after about 30minutes I had everything filled out and the trade-in value of my civic applied to the purcahse. I was given a delivery date of 1/21/22.
The day before delivery I received a text that "my delivery has been delayed to the following day". I anticipated a delay after looking up everything online, and was ok with it, because the civic still drove fine and I was in no rush--another reason I went with Carvana. With only a one day delay, I was expecting another delay to come in, given the volume of people getting covid and a driver issue.
To my surprise, there was no second delay, and my ct200 came on 1/22/22. The Carvana driver was an hour late, but it was Saturday so no big deal, and he was very communicative that he would be running a bit late and told me everything to expect/what I need to send (DL next to face, insurance, etc.). I checked everything with the car (undercarrage to insure it's dry, press on rear bumper to test suspension, checked oil, tires) the only thing visibly wrong with the car were some bald front tired. I took it for a test drive, which the driver said to take as long as I'd like, and found it to drive incredibly smooth with no issues other than being slightly out of alignment (likely due to bald tires that clearly hadn't been rotated by previous owner). I came back and signed the papers, the guy looked over the civic briefly (I should say there was a dent in the side and a couple of scratches to the body), then he gave me the keys to the lexus and was on the way. I got exactly the amount Carvana offered me online.
Today I took the car into a local shop networked with SilverRock about the tires, the SilverRock rep. told me they don't typically replace tires, but said since it's a first purchase and so recent they should be ok to replace the tires and do alignment. I'd seen on this thread that plenty of people brought their new purchase in for the same issue of bald tires and had them paid for by SilverRock, that's why I at least tried. Brought it into the shop, they said they'd give me a call, and just found out that they would cover the cost of 4 tires and alignment (success!).
All in all, the experience was fantastic. Customer service was very responsive on Carvana's end with any questions I had as well as on SilverRock's end, so no complaints there. Everything was straight forward, minimal delays, and a smooth experience from start to finish.
That said my advice to anyone considering Carvana for their new vehicle would be to go in expecting delays (I'm probably a best case scenario, and the car even came from the opposite coast all the way from Florida to CA), to THOROUGHLY inspect the Carfax report on the vehicle you're considering (make sure the vehicle has had limited number of owners as multiple owner vehicles often signal that the car has some kind of issue people want to get away from, preferably been serviced at regular recommended intervals, and has no accidents/major repairs), and to be aware of anything the vehicle needs done within 7days to get it handled through SilverRock ASAP--don't delay bringing it in for a vehicle inspection, do it as soon as you can. If anyone has any questions I'd be happy to help! Hopefully this experience break down helps anyone out there giving thought to Carvana make a decision.
